As his fortieth birthday approached Paul was very much aware that he didn't have a girlfriend let alone a wife. He had met plenty of people on the london dating scene. Many of them were girlfriend material but so far he hadn't met anyone that he considered to be wife material. He admitted to himself that this was probably because subconsciously he had no wish to get married as the most important thing in his life up until a few years ago been his career.
He now realised that he wanted to settle down and get married before he was much older but the dating scene was beginning to lose its appeal. Most of his intimate dinners by candle light, he thought moodily, had resulted in brief, meaningless encounters. He wondered whether or not he should leave it all to chance in the hope that one day he would meet the girlfriend of his dreams and fall in love. He imagined himself sweeping her off of her feet and her agreeing to became his wife after he proposed at the end of an intimate candle light dinner. It was then he realised that he had no food in for his dinner and would have to go the supermarket just round the corner from his flat to stock up.
Having lived on his own for so long he had become an accomplished cook and a very able food shopper. About half an hour after entering the supermarket his trolley was full and he headed for the checkout.
On an impulse he paused as he passed the shelf with ornamental and aromatic candles. Perhaps a few aromatic candles would help him relax he thought. Suddenly he was distracted by a female voice behind him. "Planning one of your super candle light dinners for a lucky lady?" When he turned round he saw it was Alison, a former girl friend. "No such luck," he said. "I am just stocking up on food." He remembered that Alison was excellent company and that they had always got on very well. Unfortunately they had met during their foot loose and fancy free days and had inevitably drifted apart.
"Tell you what Alison, if I buy a couple of these ornamental candles will you come and have a candle light dinner with me?" Alison thought for a moment and suddenly her face broke into a smile. "Sounds good to me" she said "I am famished!"
A delighted Paul promised himself that he was not going to allow her to slip through his fingers so easily this time.
