Dating women, for my sister, has not always been easy. Ever since she has been aware of sexual and intimate issues, she has also known that she preferred women to men. It wasn't too long thereafter that she also discovered that this wasn't the socially preferred sexual orientation. She's over 40 now, so things have gotten better for her and societal perceptions of homosexuality have become more liberal. Before this liberalization of ideas, however, she had quite a difficult time coming to terms with her sexual orientation and that fact that she was interested in dating women.

She's always had a hard time meeting like minded women, since she lives in a small town and there are not too many 'out' lesbians where she lives. She's tired on-line dating a couple of times, but that didn't seem to work too well for her as she always seemed to end up with someone that she shared little in common with except for their sexual orientation. There has been many a time that she has been so frustrated with dating women and the struggles that it entailed for her, that she vowed to be celibate and alone for the rest of her life.

She never really was serious about these vows however, and longed for someone to cuddle with at night and someone to whisper loving and caring things to. She had a big heart, and always wanted to share it with someone special.

It just so happened that once she stopping focusing on dating women successfully, women started flocking to her. It came totally unexpected to her as she had all but given up on the prospects of spending quality and intimate moments with other women. All of the sudden, women were approaching her wherever she was and being both forward and subtle about their attractions toward her. She was delighted, and started to wonder if she was somehow wearing a mark on her forehead that said 'I am a lesbian'. She wondered how these women knew that she was gay.

The answer came to her one day while she was on a date with a woman from out of town that she happened to meet in a supermarket. The woman asked her how she got to have her name posted as a local lesbian hero at the only gay bar in town. She was shocked, and admitted to her ignorance of the posting. Regardless, she had her answer.
